Drive sales with National Home Security Month from Yale

National Home Security Month (NHSM) from Yale is back from 1st October celebrating its tenth year of helping homeowners across the UK prioritise their home security.

When the clocks go back, there is often a spike in burglary attempts across the UK, as opportunists make use of the darker nights to operate under the cover of darkness. And this is why NHSM runs throughout the entirety of October, aiming to raise awareness of the importance of upgrading home security at this time of year.

And whilst NHSM is celebrating its tenth campaign, it’s clear, from a survey commissioned by Yale, that home security is still not a priority for UK homeowners.

Although Brits have their own unusual tactics to secure their homes, such as keeping a light on when they go out (52%) and leaving on a TV or radio (28%)1, it was in fact revealed that two thirds of Brits haven’t upgraded their home security in the last two years1, a worrying concept as burglary rates continue to rise. But this lack of prioritisation for Brits also provides opportunities for the industry.

 

Front door security

Front door security should be an area of focus for all homeowners. According to Yale’s research, in 23% of cases, burglars gained access to a home through the front door1, highlighting the importance of reliable, high-quality door security.

One of the easiest and effective ways to improve the security of a front door, and a product many homeowners have little knowledge over, is a maximum-security cylinder. Yale’s research revealed that only 27% of respondents knew what type of lock they need to prevent lock snapping1, so this presents a lucrative opportunity to installers and fabricators alike to engage with customers and raise awareness of 3-star cylinders.  

Further research revealed that breaking through a window was the most popular form of entry into a home by opportunists, occurring 25% of the time1, so window security will be at front of mind for homeowners hearing about the campaign.

 

Smart security

The survey also revealed that 53% of Brits have suggested they’d be willing to pay more to buy or rent a home if it has better security measures or a smart security system in place1, showing the opportunities in the smart home category.

Allowing users to check in to their homes remotely, high quality smart security products, like those from Yale, offer convenience and added security.

Earlier this year, Yale announced the launch of SensCheck, its new integrated smart window and door lock sensors. This exciting smart addition to the company’s hardware portfolio means that fabricators and installers can now offer homeowners the option of being able to check the status of their doors and windows on their smart devices and phones.

And NHSM will be doing this through a national radio campaign, social media content and promotions in-stores and online.

“With the heightened promotion of NHSM this year, the door and window industry should look to get behind the campaign and this increased interest and focus on home security.”
