For more than 120 years Caldwell has been supplying quality hardware for window manufacturing. In this time, we’ve introduced a number of industry firsts such as the first moving coil constant force balance, first co-located casement window operator and lock, and the first heavy-duty spiral balance.
Caldwell has also expanded into international markets to become a world-leading specialist window hardware manufacturer, with over 1 billion balances sold so far.
Founded in 1888 by Allen Boucher and William Caldwell, Caldwell Hardware supplied clock spring counterbalances for window construction throughout Northeast America.
In 1948 we developed the first spiral balance – Spirex – catapulting Caldwell to the top of the window hardware market.
The 1950s saw the introduction of breakthrough new products, weatherstrip balances Spiraflex and Rib-Tite.
During the late 70s Caldwell developed Trim-Tilt for wood and Aluma-Tilt for aluminium to allow hung windows to tilt to the inside for safe and easy cleaning.
In 1991 we launched ULTRA-LIFT balances, our first hybrid balance designed to balance large and heavy windows.
In 1973 Caldwell embarked on a joint venture with an English window manufacturer to supply products to the UK and European markets. Caldwell eventually bought out the partners and established Caldwell Hardware United Kingdom.
In 2023 Caldwell joined Yale to become one of the leading manufacturers of door and window hardware for the fenestration industry. A move that sees Caldwell retain its strong brand identity but acknowledges its new position within Yale.
